Welcome to Natureworks
Cattery Located in the
1000 Islands Region of Canada
We still see
deer, wolves and snapping turtles as a routine part of our day. This appreciation for nature in all its forms,
and the way it was created to work in perfect balance, is our inspiration.
Our cats allow us to enjoy them as we study those laws of nature and genetics that make a Bengal
or Pixie-Bob what they are...
...a perfect example of how nature works.
Natureworks
is located near Gananoque, Ontario, Canada. It is a small personal
family operated cattery dedicated to breeding domestic Bengal and Pixie-Bob cats.
My son A.J. helps with socializing kittens. Gananoque is located approximately 2.5 hours away from both Toronto and Montreal
and 2 hours from Syracuse, New York. Our cats are raised as a part of our
family, underfoot as much as possible. Each kitten is given the
socialization it requires to function well in any household, including those with
dogs, thanks to our Bernese Mountain Dogs.
My business is a
dog grooming shop, Natureworks Pet Services, http://www.dog-grooming.ca
which I run from my home, so I am here with the cats and kittens during the day. We are usually around
during weekdays for visits as well as on those weekends that we're not attending
Cat Shows or Pet Expo's. Visits should be by appointment as my dog
grooming schedule is rather full.
As you can see,
dinnertime at Natureworks is one of our cats' favorite times of day... besides
napping, being pampered, "helping" around the house and giving
themselves a bath. Kittens are sometimes born in our bedroom and
sometimes in the nursery area. Some mothers will repeatedly carry their
kittens around and not settle down with them so have to be confined to a
cage.
These nursery cages are each individually lighted, have shelves, a scratching
post and a nesting box if needed.
Unfortunately
you can't keep breeding males in your home because of territorial spraying, so
at about 8 or 9 months of age the males move to the "Cattery", a well
insulated glorified
mini barn with indoor/outdoor runs, a propane furnace, floor level windows and
indoor shelves, beds and litter boxes. The boys have access to the
outdoors on all but the coldest days but are shut in the little building at
night to keep them safe. The cattery is very well insulated so doesn't
require much to keep it heated to a toasty 70 degrees.
Each of the males must have their own individual run
which is furnished with a bark chip floor, rocks, logs and natural trees to
climb (as far as the roof anyway). The trees provide shade with the odd
sunny spot in the summer and when the leaves are gone in the winter the runs are
flooded with sunshine from morning until dusk.
We
try to keep our males as comfortable as possible in their little home, but don't
generally use them at stud for an extended period. They are neutered and
placed as pets when they are retired from breeding so they can enjoy the
majority of their lives as pampered house pets.
The proof of
quality is in the years of happy customers and being able to consistently
produce kittens and cats able to prove themselves both physically and mentally
in the show ring. Please visit our Shows and
Awards page to see just a few of the dozens of Natureworks cats to achieve
titles in both TICA and CCA cat shows. We have been breeding top quality
cats for the past 10 years and were breeding and showing Bernese Mountain Dogs
for 15 years before that.
Our cats are
always well up in the Regional and National standings for their respective
breeds and we endeavour to continue our education by attending seminars, breed
congresses and veterinary symposiums and by keeping up our memberships to breed
clubs, internet information email lists as well as constantly striving to be on
top of new medical and nutritional advancements. Breeding any kind of animals
takes time, effort, money and a very humble attitude. The more you know,
the more there is to know. I am proud to mentor many new breeders and also
volunteer time to the local Gananoque Rescue by grooming homeless dogs. If
you have any questions or concerns about our cattery, I am happy to address
them.
